RuneScape was a point-andclick combat style

The game draws inspiration from roguelikes including FTL and party games such as Overcooked Cheap OSRS Gold, The game Means Warp sees players control crew members onboard the ship, operating various mechanisms, aiming weapons and making repairs, and finally taking a map of the tangled space.

To learn more about Jagex’s publication of This Means Warp, we reached out to Outlier Games’ founders Paul Froggatt and Matt Rathbun and Lead Product Manager for Jagex, Robert Fox-Galassi on their thoughts on this new partnership.

Like many indie game developers our beginnings in the games industry came from tinkering with game ideas and programming over a long time, before we finally came up with something playable!

I’ve got 10 years’ work experience at Google before I decided to pivot to game development full time. Matt’s career spans building Hollywood computer systems for movie sets, as well as a stint in South Korean esports and mobile game development. We couldn’t be more excited to share our work with this Means Warp.

A variety of video games have given an ambitious developer the idea to create their own. However, it’s rare to see the work of a different creator picked up by the creator of the original title.

That was not the case for Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team of Australian developer Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle is currently being released by Jagex the company that developed RuneScape (a game which was the primary inspiration behind his own initiative.

Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of RuneScape and similar MMOs and reduces it to a menu-based idle game in which players can manage their inventory, skills and quests. In combat, completing battles and winning earns XP and runescape 07 gold loot that can later be placed into the skill tree or upgrades players prefer, and repeating activities such as crafting or cutting wood yields rewards of their own.
