About Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Dubai is famous for its luxury, grandeur, and amazing buildings. It also has one of the biggest and most impressive aquariums in the world: the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. This underwater world is in the middle of the Dubai Mall and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Besides its beautiful look and large size, there are some interesting facts about the aquarium that many people do not know.

A Peek into the Depths

The Dubai Aquarium holds more than 140 species of marine animals—holding at least an impressive list of the most incredible sea creatures such as sharks, and rays added to the 33,000 marine animals in total. The largest tank, primary in nature, contains an impressive 10 million liters of water, 51 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 11 meters deep! To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of about four Olympic-sized swimming pools. The aquarium is an engineering marvel, designed to recreate the natural habitats of various marine creatures.

The Glass Tunnel

One of the most impressive features of the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is its massive acrylic viewing tunnel. This 48-meter-long tunnel gives visitors an unparalleled 360-degree view of the aquarium, providing an almost surreal feeling of walking through the ocean. What’s even more incredible is that the tunnel itself is made from 75 tons of acrylic, which is 20 times stronger than glass! This allows for a safe and clear view of the aquarium’s diverse marine life, without the risk of breakage.

The aquarium’s acrylic walls are specially treated to withstand high water pressure, ensuring the inside creatures have a safe environment to thrive. The tunnel is designed to be a fully immersive experience, where visitors can watch fish, sharks, and even giant sea turtles swim overhead.

Overview of Underwater Zoo

Sitting above the aquarium is the Underwater Zoo. It is an elaboration of the aquatic world, the zoo here presents different types of habitats that collectively showcase the wide range of diversity in the underwater world. It is divided into three sections, the zoo displays the Rainforest, the Ocean, and the Desert. The creatures in these habitats are not necessarily found in the aquarium but are equally mesmerizing.

The Rainforest area has animals like fun river otters, big freshwater fish, and some types of birds and reptiles. People can watch these animals in a green, tropical place that feels like a rainforest’s thick and wet air. This is very different from the cool, dark world under the water.

Sharks of Dubai Aquarium

The most thrilling feature of the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is the many sharks that it holds. It has a variety, among them being the famous sand tiger sharks. These sharks look scary because of their big teeth, but they are pretty safe for people. Guests can thrillingly view the sharks up close during the Shark Dive activity. One of the most thrilling and memorable activities is going down to the main tank to swim amongst the sharks. Great for those who love adrenaline.

The Dubai Aquarium has the biggest collection of sand tiger sharks in the world, which is important for people who love sharks. These sharks have very sharp teeth, but they are calm and mostly swim around looking for food.
