Adar Poonawalla – the “vaccine prince” of India – left the country in April 2021. He shot to fame after he announced that SII (of which he is the CEO) will be manufacturing the COVISHIELD vaccine for curing the COVID-19 infected patients. He struck a deal with AstraZeneca to mass-produce the vaccine doses in India.

Given how important is Adar Poonawalla is currently for the country, the government started providing “Y” category security to Poonawalla in view of “potential threats” to him. This means that the armed commandos of the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) will be with him all round the clock and the “Y” security will entail about 4-5 armed commandos for his security.

But soon, Adar Poonawalla left for London, UK, and is currently residing in a mansion in Mayfair, which he rented for around $69,000 a week. Speaking to The Times in an interview, he alleged that he has been receiving threats from various big shots in the country and that is the reason he and his family went to London. He said that he will be staying in London for an extended period because he does not want to go back to that situation. Adar said that: “I don’t want to be in a situation where you are trying to do your job and just because you can’t supply the needs of X, Y or Z, you really don’t want to guess what they are going to do,” he said, adding, “Everything falls on my shoulders, but I can’t do it alone.”

Adar Poonawalla narrated the nature of the threats saying that he is afraid of the implications which will follow of what they might do if he did not comply with their wishes and whims. He told that “It’s not foul language. It’s the tone. It’s the implication of what they might do if I don’t comply. It’s taking control. It’s coming over and basically surrounding the place and not letting us do anything unless we give in to their demands.” He also added that “They are saying if you don’t give us the vaccine it’s not going to be good”.

On being asked about his views on the Kumbh Mela and the elections in West Bengal being the reasons behind a huge increase in the number of covid cases, he said that he does not want to comment on this unless he wants his head “chopped off” because this topic is too sensitive.

On May 1st, Adar Poonawalla tweeted that the production of the COVISHIELD vaccine is in full swing and he will review the operations at the SII’s vaccine-producing facility upon his return in a few days.

What might be the real reason for going to London?
Adar Poonawalla, who is currently in London, decided to invest about Rs 2400 crores in a project that will include a sales office, clinical research, trials, development, and manufacturing of vaccines. Many people are claiming that this investment might be for producing the Novovax vaccine (for covid cure), which is currently not licensed in India for manufacturing and selling.
