Loan forgiveness or cancellations means that you are no longer required to pay all or some of the loans incurred. Student loan forgiveness Biden can ease the financial burden that 42 million borrowers have long faced. Steven Rossman is a CPA and shareholder at Drucker & Scaccetti, a Philadelphia-based accounting firm focusing on taxation.
He told CNBC Select that the government took the necessary next few steps carefully and canceled some or all student loans, then the student loan forgiveness Biden program, in many cases, would be taxable. He further explained that generically when a debt is forgiven, student loans, or any other, the amount that is forgiven represents taxable income in the year it is written off.
Everything you need to know regarding student loan forgiveness programs
A hypothetical example for taxpayers would be: If, as a federal student loan borrower, you have ten thousand dollars of your loan canceled in 2021, ten thousand dollars would be added to your taxable income. This would fall under what’s called the “Cancellation of Debt (COD)” income, and you would presumably receive a Form 1099-C for 2021 aa documentation.
In layman’s terms, although you wouldn’t have to pay 10 thousand dollars, you are chargeable to a 2000 dollar tax. However, certain exceptions apply to tax-free student loan cancellation. This tax-free forgiveness might be for workers of the PSLF that is Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
The 2017 College Cost Reduction and Access Act created the PSLF, which allows borrowers with direct federal loans who make 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer to have the remainder of their balance forgiven. Qualifying employees include any federal, state, local or tribal government and non-profitable organizations.
The National Consumer Law Center estimates that while approximately two million student loan borrowers have been in repayment for more than 20 years, just 32 borrowers have ever qualified for the student loan forgiveness Biden program cancellation through the federal government’s income-driven repayment program.
Perks of the student loan forgiveness initiative
The student loan forgiveness Biden program would make higher education for the middle-class easier and affordable. Not only that, it would make education more accessible to many students who are otherwise apprehensive about taking loans that would be very hard to repay for the rest of their working adult life.
If this program is approved, it would make many students’ lives easier and provide for a brighter future.
Criticisms for the government’s decisions
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an American politician serving as the US representative of New York’s 14th congregational district since 2019, took to Twitter to point out her disappointment in the government’s decision. She stated in her tweet how it did not matter which school someone went to because the entire generation of working-class kids was encouraged to go into more debt under the guise of elitism.
She formally stated how this was wrong and must be changed. She defended the middle class saying that it wasn’t fair for children born in middle-class families to miss out on top-quality education. Nowhere does it say that the middle class must trade-off early childhood education for student loan forgiveness Biden and how the government should be working towards doing both.
She also stated in a next tweet about how the government can do better and keep pushing towards making this bill more generic. The case against student loan forgiveness Biden was looking shakier by the day, according to her. She pointed fingers at the Senate Majority Leader on board to forgive 50 thousand dollar loans.
She also believes that President Biden is holding back and not doing his best to improve this situation for all students, “but many of the arguments against it just don’t hold water on close inspection.”
Bottom Line
Although the topic has been the crux of many debates and discussions, no conclusive plan has been brought into effect. It is notably argued by many that student loan forgiveness Biden will benefit the majority of student loan borrowers (roughly 67%). Under Senator Elizabeth Warren’s proposed 50000 dollars debt cancelation, 36 million student borrowers would see their loan debt erased.
For months, the government has been indecisive about the plan and has not given much information to the general public. But surely the student loan forgiveness Biden is a topic they are looking at very seriously.
